5 is Alain Caron's fifth solo album and makes no secret of the Canadian bassist's invaluable talent on electric and acoustic bass.
Pastorius' influence is almost impossible to avoid, but Caron has always managed to create his own, denser, less heavy sound. He is perfectly comfortable with technology and proves to be a richly lyrical player where the space between notes is of equal importance.

There is an atmospheric quality to much of Caron's writing that is rooted in Weather Report. But equally, groove predominates, whether on the steady, funky backbeat of the fretless-driven "Double Agent and the fretted string-popping "No Left Turn on Tuesday, or the looser kineticism of "Signal" and the ballad "Show of Hands," where a loop of drums and electronic percussion gently guide the beat beneath his melodic fretless lines.
In 5 it's clear which instrument is the leader but always music-centred, and Caron is proving that his program is more unselfconscious and, as a result, considerably compelling.

Essential Components of 5 Bass Booklet

  • Bass partsThe music for bass is written in standard notation.
  • Chord Symbols. The defining, characteristic component of sheet music is its chord symbols. A chord symbol defines the current harmonic region, as a key signature, and it stays in effect until the chord changes. Chord symbols are set above the staff, centred over the beat where the new harmonic region begins.
  • Tempo, Styles, Clef, Key and Time SignaturesThese provide a basic orientation for the musician.
  • Bass partsThe music for bass is written in standard notation.
  • Roadmaps, Repeats, and Arrangement Directions. To keep the scores concise, multiple passes through a section are indicated with repeat signs, multiple ending systems, codas, segnos, and the like. Rehearsal letters or names for different sections (Intro, Verse, Chorus, etc.), are further clarified with double bar lines. Text indications such as “4X” or “Vamp Out” shed light on the form or arrangement.
  • Slash Notation. Time slashes (////) with chord symbols written above indicate solo sections. Charts exclusively for rhythm section players might feature slash notation throughout with no written melody.
  • Ensemble NotationCritical instrumental hooks, ensemble rhythmic concepts (stop time, or kicks), and repeated licks (often for the bass) might appear in notation in temporary second staff.
